14573938 Private Harry Driver. Royal Corps of Signals. Born at Burnley, Lancashire on the 12 November 1924. Enlisted on the 1 April 1943 and did his basic training at Scarborough, Yorkshire and was later trained at the Royal Signals School at Caterrick, Yorkshire. With further training as a radio operator and linesman at Fort William, Scotland he then moved south to Gosport, Hampshire in readiness for the invasion of Europe. Embarked for France on the 6 June 1944. Reported "missing" and drowned on D Day 6 June 1944. However he had been rescued and returned to England. Later returned to the Normandy Beaches and joined his unit serving with the 7th Armoured Brigade. Served for the remainder of the war seeing action in France, Belgium and Germany. Promoted L/Corporal 12 November 1946 and transferred to the Army Reserve on the 14 September 1947. |
