803566 L/Bombardier Harry Knowles. Royal Artillery. Awarded the Military Medal in the Supplement to the London Gazette 20 August 1940. The citation/recommendation reads, "At St. Vanat on 27 May 1940, under intense small arms fire from tanks and infantry and when all the remaining numbers of his detachment had been killed or wounded, he, with one other, continued to fire the gunobtaining several hits on enemy tanks, before being himself wounded and unable to take further part." Recommendation was made by Major J. S. Elliott, MC, Royal Artillery. Evacuated from the beaches, Dunkirk, France on the 1 June 1940. Later served in Singapore. Knowles was born at Bolton, Lancashire on the 24 September 1911, but came to live in Burnley in 1938. He lived on Oak Mount Street. Married Mary A. Warburton at Farnworth, Lancashire on the 24 December 1938.
