3377300 W.O. Class 2 (Company Sergeant Major) Thomas Henry JACKSON.

1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment.

Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the Supplement to the London Gazette dated 11 July 1940.

The recommendation/citation reads, "This warrant officer has been the mainstay of his company during the period 17 May to 2 June 1940. In Tournai he showed complete disregard for enemy shell fire and brought ammunition up to the forward posts despite heavy shell fire. His general conduct gave the troops great confidence and his example was undoubtedly a great help to the young soldiers. At Rousbrugge Maringe, this warrant officer was left in charge of the rear guard of his company. We were in very close contact with the enemy (probably as little as 50 yards) and when the last platoon was ready to leave it was found there was some men still left behind with the transport. This warrant officer remained behind until he was able to collect the last few men but he allowed the platoon to withdraw. I consider that this was a brave action as the enemy had been extreemly active on the company front".

Thomas H Jackson attested into the East Lancashire Regiment on the 28 June 1920 at the age of 18 years and 2 months. He was a coal drawer and his next of kin is shown as his mother Sarah Ellen Jackson of 48a, Clarence Street, Burnley, Lancashire.

He was commissioned on the 5 November 1940.
