3379660 Sergeant John James Bruce. 4th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the Supplement to the London Gazette dated 11 July 1940. The recommendation/citation reads, "On various dates between 10 May 1940 and 31 May 1940, this NCO who was battalion signal sergeant rendered invaluable service to the battalion by maintaining intercommunications under very difficult and dangerous circumstances. During most of the time he also carried on his shoulders the responsability of the battalion signals officer who was evacuated to hospital. After being captured by the enemy at Cost Cappel on the 29 May 1940 and marched back about a mile into their lines he made his escape down a sewer and adjoined his unit". Report in the Burnley Express of 12 July 1940. John James Bruce lived at 20, Lanark Street, Burnley, Lancashire and enlisted into the East Lancashire Regiment on the 26 January 1921. His next of kin was shown as his mother Mary Bruce of 4, Pleasant Court, Burnley, Lancashire.
