7939201 Trooper Stuart Atkinson, Royal Armoured Corps. Wounded and prisoner of war 13 June 1944. Enlisted in June 1941 into the RAC. Served in North Africa and Italy prior to taking part in the Allied landings at Normandy on the 6 June 1944. He was employed by his uncle prior to joining up, who was the proprietor of Atkinson's Radio's, Harle Syke. His brother Kenneth served in the Merchant Navy and his sister Marjorie served in the Land Army. He attended Stoneyholme Methodist Church and School. The Burnley Express of 22 July 1944 reported: - Reported missing in Normandy on June 13th, Trooper Stuart Atkinson, eldest son of the late Mr. Atkinson, of 101, Burns Street, Burnley, is believed to be a prisoner of war in Germany. His wife, whose home is in Rochdale, has received a letter from a Londoner, stating that the German radio gave the news that Tpr. Atkinson was in German hands and was recovering from a thigh wound. POW number 53319. At Stalag 9c (Mulhousen) POW Camp until the end of the war.
